Small still voice?

Okay, to today the Lord's voice sounded totally like my mother's.  Last night during my quiet time as I laid in bed, I was telling the Lord all the things I wanted to get done this week.  I knew there is a lot scheduled for this week (especially Wednesday) and I had to get the house in working order.  So I asked the Lord to help me get through the day on Monday so that I can feel prepared for everything else going on.

Fast forward to this morning.  I was up and kids were getting ready for school.  I drove Mary to preschool and dropped the big kids off at school.  I get home and begin my normal morning routine of breakfast in one hand and fingers navigating facebook via my laptop while I sit in my rocking chair.  About half way through my routine, my cell rings.  It's mom.  "Hm, okay," I thought.  I knew she and dad were headed to Lincoln for appointments and shopping so I figured she was telling me that they were headed out.  Then the words came, like a lightening bolt.  "Um, the bug man called and said he will be at our house then coming to yours.  He'll be there in an hour or two."  "What!?! Mom!  My house is trashed!!"  I sat in disbelief.  Really I did.  They were not scheduled to come until Thursday.  It is to be every 2nd Thursday!  "That's okay," mom said, "He's told me stories of houses that are much worse than yours."  Uh, thanks mom, that is to make me feel better?  This is my house and I have a strange man coming into it and I can't possibly stand to be in the same place as him knowing what kind of mess he will be walking into.

I then inform my husband, who is happily reading his forums and what not causally sipping his coffee and I can see into his mind.  He's sitting there chuckling at me; mocking me.  Teasing me thinking, "Bet you wished you had done more work over the weekend huh?"  Well, not really.  I don't know what he was thinking, but my guilty conscience was telling me this.  So thus I scramble to start cleaning up.  Toys, done; dirty clothes, done.  Then he says it, "Uh, aren't you going to pick up Mary?"  HOLY SMOKES!!!  I totally forgot about Mary at preschool!!  I was so thrown off by mom's call that I forgot to go get my daughter!  So again, I'm running to put my shoes and coat on and carefully, but quickly I head out in the snow covered streets to get Mary.  As I'm about to walk out the door, my husband oh so sportively tells me, "Glad I'm not going to be home when the guy comes over."  Uh, thanks dear.  Glad you got my back.

As soon as I get back it is back to cleaning like a mad woman.  The biggest feat was the office.  Oi vey.  I am so surprised I came out of there alive and nothing ate me.  Who knows what kind of creature was lurking under all that mess.  Now, believe it or not, I got it picked up, vacuumed, living room picked up and was starting to vacuum it when the bug man arrived.  I couldn't just stop my cleaning spree with his arrival, so I finished vacuuming and proceeded to the kitchen.  Again, another room with creatures and monsters lurking in corners and under pots and pans.  So to keep the kids sane, I plop them in front of my laptop with a movie (oh yeah, sometime during my picking up the tv decides to stop working) and I tell myself I am going to get the kitchen done.  I'll spare the gory details (and yes it was pretty gory) after almost seeing my breakfast for a second time, I managed to get it cleaned.  The children are going to be so happy their chore list will be relatively easy.

It is now 1 pm and I have completed almost everything on my list of cleaning for the day.  So I say thank you Lord, I heard you loud and clear.  And it is uncanny how you sound just like my mother.

A place revisited (wasn't my idea).

I had considered making this just a little post, but I might as well tell the whole story so that everyone knows.

Monday was a busy day.  Preschool in the morning, doctors appointment in the afternoon (which I actually had the time wrong on), then tae kwon do for the kids and a Jr. Auxiliary meeting for me.  Our meetings ended at 8pm so we got home late and I was trying to get all the kids to bed.  As I was in the kitchen Veronica came to the gate and happily showing me that she had a necklace chain in her hands.  I take the chain from her to put away and as she inhaled to say something she chocked on something in her mouth.  She began coughing, screaming and crying, and gagging trying to work it up her throat.  I noticed that the butterfly necklace pendant was not on the table and I knew what she had in her mouth.  I called the hospital right away (I did hesitate thinking maybe I should just see if it would pass, but knowing the shape and size I didn't entertain that idea for long).  As I was on the phone with the nurse, Veronica had an "oh that's better" moment and she stopped crying so frantically.  I called mom back to the house and I took her to the ER.  I told the PA what happened and they took two x-rays.  I never did get a chance to see them, but the butterfly had stopped in her throat right above her esophagus.  Exact same place as her one penny last year.

Due to the nature of the foreign body (medical diagnosis used), after the PA consulted with Dr. Vanderneck and they spoke to the General Surgeon from York, it was decided that we needed to go to Children's Hospital in Omaha.  *sigh*  Definitely not what I was expecting.  However, York is not equipped to do pediatric procedures such as this, so we needed to go to a bigger hospital.  So we all prepped for our trek.  I had Ryan get me an overnight bag together, the nurses put in an iv lock in Veronica's hand (after a failed attempt in the arm- she was so brave), and the EMS was called.  So Veronica and I got our first (and hopefully last) ride to Omaha in an ambulance.  The butterfly was sitting at an angle, so we needed to be taken by EMS in case it dislodged and cut off her air way.

We arrived in Omaha a little after midnight Tuesday morning.  The nurses settled us in and we spoke to a couple of Resident Doctors.  Veronica slept on the ride there, but she was pretty wound up at the hospital.  They took us for two more x-rays to see if it had moved (which it hadn't).  Veronica was pretty much done with everyone touching her all the time, and she was asking to go home.  We were finally able to try to get some sleep by 3am.  That night I knew Veronica and I were going to be okay, but my thoughts were with Ryan and the other kids, especially Michael.  Michael has only taken 2 bottles and he still nurses very heavily at night, so I was concerned with how he was going to handle being separated from me.  Thankfully the hospital had a roving breast pump and a refrigerator in the room for me to use.

Around 6am Tuesday morning, (yeah, I got three hours of broken sleep- Veronica refused to sleep in the hospital crib so she slept with me on the couch), they took us for another set of pictures.  I knew the answer, but they were looking to see if it had moved.  It hadn't.  So they put her on the surgery schedule for an EGD where they take a scope down the throat and pull the foreign body out.  We were told it would be sometime in the morning.  Around mid-morning they said they had her on the schedule for a 2:30pm procedure.  Great, we have a time and more of an idea what is going to happen.  I knew what the procedure entailed because she had the same done to remove the pennies from her stomach.  Anyway, they had a wonderful playroom on the Med/Surg floor so we took advantage of that as much as possible.  I tell you though, it is difficult to follow a 2 year old around a play room with an iv and pole.  Anyway, time got closer to 2pm and we were told that it was going to be closer to 4 before she was taken in.  Bummer.  All the while, Veronica is NPO (nothing to eat or drink).  The poor girl was starving.  She would watch me pump milk and would ask me for a drink.  I had to keep reminding her that she couldn't have anything until she had the butterfly taken out of her tummy.  Around 2ish they took her for one more set of pictures to see if it had moved, it had not.

By 4pm they took us down to surgery.  They gave her some medicine to make her "loopy" (she was looking pretty good too) and then they wheeled her to the surgery room.  I never really did look at the time when they called us back when she was done.  Oh it was pretty cool.  The surgery waiting room had a flat screen with a list of all the patients in surgery and their status.  So we could see when she was in surgery, recovery, and discharged.  Anyway, they told us she was done and we went with her as she was wheeled back to her room.  I remember last time (we were there as an outpatient) that I could hear her screaming as she had come out of anesthesia.  This time, she was determined to not be held by me.  She wanted to show that she was totally okay.  As she stood on the floor while the nurse took her vitals, she kept teeter-totting.  She tried hard to stand there, but she realized it would be better to be held, so I held her for a bit.  About an hour after surgery she was back to her normal self.

I was so hungry by then (this was around 6ish pm I think) so I decided to go get myself something to eat while Ryan stayed with her.  Oh, let me back up first.  The real monkey wrench (as if rushing to Omaha wasn't crazy enough) the doctor came out after the surgery he gave me the little butterfly in a cup and then said what the plan was for the evening which included observation for the night then if she could tolerate food in the morning, she could go home.  Uh, er, um... say what?  I was not expecting to have to stay another night, but I understood why.  After all it was a rather large charm and it was lodged at an odd angle.  So rather than going home and having something happen then be rushed right back to Omaha, we stayed.  Well, rather I stayed with Veronica.  Ryan had to go home because, well he didn't have any clothes with him and he had to work Wednesday.  So, I got it set up with mom and dad and they were coming to pick us up Wednesday morning.  We got Veronica settled in, and after tolerating liquids she was disconnected from the iv pole.  Hurray!!!!  That was one happy girl.  She was able to play in the play room with out me having to constantly remind her, "Hang on you're going to get tangled up!!"  I think we both called it a night around 10pm.  Sleep, wonderful blissful sleep.  Again, she refused the crib so she slept on the couch with me.  This time I didn't have to worry about her iv getting tangled up.

All that night we had nurses in and out, and starting very early this morning (Wednesday) the doctors made their rounds.  I slipped out while she slept to get myself some breakfast.  When I came back she popped up in bed and saw my white container.  Her eyes widened and she said, "Wow, eat!"  How could I refuse that!  After all they said that if she could tolerate breakfast we could go home.  So I was already planning on having to share my breakfast with her, so I got her some scrambled eggs.  She chowed down on those delightful eggs.

Oh, yes, the real kicker of the whole ordeal.  When we first arrived the doctor asked me about her bowel movements and if they were really hard because her belly was full of poop.  Yeah, that didn't surprise me because this girl can poop like a big kid.  So I was prepared for some pretty major diapers.  After the surgery they gave her lots of fluids to drink including apple juice.  All night she had been passing gas so I knew it was coming.  With the surgery, air tends to get pushed into the stomach, so she was still passing gas.  That night it happened.  With the first diaper there I saw it.  A rock.  Yep, I told the nurse and she said it was hard?  No, I said a rock, literally a rock.  Sometime in the last two or three days she had swallowed a flat rock and it passed that night.  Sometimes I think I need to be saving everything I find in her diapers.

Okay, so after breakfast more nurses and doctors came in to check on her and finally the surgeon came in.  And I think I embarrassed him a bit; I was pumping when he walked in.  Didn't bother me, but it kind of caught him off guard.  The beautiful words were spoken, she is doing good and we can go home.  We had to wait a little bit as mom and dad had to load up Mary and Michael and drive the 2 hours to get to the hospital.  While we waited, Veronica was getting very tired of the rooms and so we walked the halls in a little red car.  The nurses and doctors loved seeing her roam the halls.  However, as we walked past all the rooms, I was very thankful for the health of my children.  There were so many sick children on that floor.  So many rooms with contact/airborne/droplet precautions.  So as we walked, I prayed for every child in every room I walked past.

Our ride finally arrived and at 11am Wednesday morning we left the hospital.  As much as I don't want to ever return there, I'm not going to hold my breath.  Oh, after all while at the hospital in the playroom she tried to pull the same stunt again by putting a small lego piece in her mouth.  Thankfully another family was in there and the lady told me.  She had her back to me and I knew she was looking at the shelf, but I didn't even see her hands move!  And yes, I took it away right away and took all those pieces off the shelf and to the front desk.  I didn't know why they were even in that play room.  Anyway, we are home; and life was waiting for me.  It didn't miss a beat.  Kitchen with dirty dishes, clothes and toys lying around, and dirty diapers to be washed.  I didn't mind getting things back in order because after all I still have my darling Veronica with us.

For the love of cookies.

So, since yesterday it has been snowing and blowing, much like most of the country.  As I sit from my little office desk, I can see the big picture windows in the living room and have noticed traffic drive past the house as well as the neighbor across the street coming and going.  "Hey cool!" I thought. "If I really need to get out and go to the store I should be able to get there with no problems."  So Ryan decides to make pizza for lunch (yep, it's 1:37 pm and we have not yet had lunch.  That's the beauty of school snow days where kids sleep late and then munch for breakfast.)  Anyway, I had already planned to make peanut butter cookies as well.  Just like my hoarding of cloth diapers, I have 6 18 oz jars of creamy peanut butter, 2 40 oz jars of chunky peanut butter, and 1 40 oz jar of creamy.  *sigh* So I figured I could make a small dent in that stash and make two double batches of cookies.  I get started with weighing/measuring my ingredients and realize I do not have enough butter or shortening to even make a double batch.

Hmm, so what do I do?  I already didn't get milk before the storm hit, (yes mom I know, I should have made sure we at least had milk) so I figured, if there are vehicles on the road, why can't I get to the store too?  So I put my boots on, bundle up, and head on out.  The drive way is not very snow covered, so it should be easy.  Then I hit the end of the drive way.  *CRUNCH* oops  I pull forward thinking (yeah here I go thinking again) "If I gun it I can get through."  I gunned it and *CRUNCH*  and now I'm stuck.  *insert momma's growl and heavy sigh*.  I jump out and look at the damage.  Yeah, after three years of living here, you'd think I would remember that the end of the drive way is at a slant to the road and snow piles up there.  Nope, I didn't remember that.  So there I am with snow packed up over my back bumper (we have a Ford Windstar mini-van).  I grab the snow shovel thinking maybe I can dig out, but seeing how much snow is really under the van, I simply scoop enough to get me unstuck.  So now what.  Accepting defeat (because I am not going to shovel 2 feet of snow just for butter and milk... kids can drink juice) I run inside and get Ryan to help me.  Like a trooper (thank goodness he loves me) he comes out in his winter coat, house pants, and sneakers (he doesn't have boots) and drives the van while I push.

Freedom was so close.  I can still see people driving by the house while I type and sip my coffee.  The extra cookies will just have to wait.

UPDATE:
Let's just add some insult to injury here.  I went to mix up my cookies.  However, in my eagerness I did not let the butter come up to room temperature.  So in my mixture, sans the flour, I have little butter dots.  Hm, okay.  So I decide to let the mixture sit to see if it will all come to room temperature and mix smoothly.  I do some facebook, blog about my "adventure" and feed Michael.  I figured enough time has lapsed so I go to finish mixing my dough.  Well, the butter really hasn't melted any, but I want to get them done.  I add my flour and all is mixed.  I prep my pans (all the while my oven has been on preheating while I waited for my butter to come to room temperature) and scoop out my first pan.  I go to put it in the oven and what do I see?!?  IT'S LOCKED!!!  Veronica has struck again.  In her adventures through the house, she has locked my oven door.  The only way I can get it to unlock is turn it off and wait for it to cool.  When that happens I can finally conquer my cookie quest.

Holy Cloth Diapers Bat Man!!

A couple of weeks ago mom and I had gone to a impromptu "Meet and Greet" in Omaha (yeah, a 2 hr drive) to meet Kelly Wels. She is the previous owner of DiaperShops.com and owner of KellysCloset (she also has a blog kellywels.com ). And through her facebook I came across the last minute meet up and I just couldn't pass up such an opportunity. Imagine my surprise that I would meet someone there that I would know! A question Kelly asked was how many diapers do we have. I clarified the question wanting to know the number we use or actually own. Off the top of my head from a previous count and conversation with my brother Jay, I thought I had about 96 diapers. Yes that's right, just under 100 diapers are under my possession.

The young woman I met at the Meet and Greet was from the Lincoln area (we met at our Lamaze class just a few months ago). She had written a note on her facebook about her stash and how many she had. She too had around 100 which were not all in use as some were newborn and others like Gerber prefolds are better as burp rags than diapers. So I sat with my calculator and added up how much I really did have. Imagine to my surprise I actually own 188 diapers. Now granted some of these are Gerber (39) and some are newborn, but really, 188!?! Hm, that's beyond addiction I'd say, that's borderline hoarding! So I realized something needs to be done with all these diapers. In reality I only use 48 (8 being night diapers only). Each kid (Veronica and Michael) have 19 diapers which gets me through an every other day wash routine.

Okay, so back to what to do with all these diapers. I had considered selling them, but as someone who really only buys new (actually I've only bought new diapers) I was hesitant to sell them. We could definitely use the money, but it was feeling like selling was not what I wanted to do with them. Part of my procrastination in getting rid of them is that emotionally I couldn't part with them. Yep, that's right. I'm emotionally attached to my diapers. I've spent many many hours on the internet reading and researching diapers trying to find that "perfect" diaper for my babies. I keep thinking, "But what if I want to use it again? Switch things up again from my pocket diapers?" However, deep inside I knew I wasn't going to go back to the two part system of fitteds/covers or the three part system of prefold/fastener/cover. I like my pockets and my new love of AIO (but that is a whole different blog). So, I've been sitting on these 188 diapers wondering what I'm going to be doing with them.

A few weeks ago, I read a blog by Autumn Beck (love her blog All About Cloth Diapers) Selling Cloth Diapers to Help Orphans in Ethiopia. And she had spoken about two women who have/are adopting a child from Ethiopia. With over 30 babies in diapers, the orphanage did not have enough to diaper all the little bottoms. Their greatest need is prefolds, microfiber inserts, and covers. Well hot dog!! My stash (minus the pockets and AIO) are mainly prefolds, covers, and a few fitteds. So after supper the kids and I pulled out all my tubs in storage. When I came across these blogs, my heart sang! THAT'S IT!! This is what needs to be done with my diapers! The thought of plastic bags and disposable diapers being rinsed and reused broke my heart. For a fleeting moment while I packed them, I thought, "But oh, I may want to try these again." But I quickly squashed that thought remembering what I read. So my diapers have found their calling. Hopefully later this week I will have a chance to get them all mailed.

Mary wanted to get in on the picture action.

Getting it all in one place really shocked me. I was amazed at how much was just sitting there being unused. So in my collection I had the following:

Gerber Flats/Prefolds: 39
Gerber Pull-on Pants: 13
Snugglebottoms Fitteds: 18
Kissaluv Fitteds: 18
GoodMama fitteds: 2
Thirsties Duo, Bummis Whisper Wrap, Blueberry Wrap Covers: 16
Green Mountain Prefolds: 11
Diaper Rite Prefolds (S/M/L): 12/12/12
Unknown Prefold (I know I blogged about it but can't find the name): 6
Snappi: 5
Diaper Pins: 7 pairs

After counting (and Rachael being a dear and keeping a list) I got it all boxed up and ready to be mailed.
